Fast & Fun

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Friends of ours have a little girl who’ll be having her first birthday in February.  I’m feeling very party-ish these days, but alas, I’m in no position to throw a party myself (hm…there is the first episode of the new LOST season coming up…I may take that back.) I’ve volunteered to help plan and set up for Robyn’s special day.  I want to contribute something handmade, but with a little one to watch over, this project has to be something easy and interruptible. I decided to make a pennant banner.  It’s the perfect project for me right now: it uses fabric (I have a ton of that!) and it can easily be worked on in stages (good for those days when I have only 20 minutes here and there).

Pennant banners are all over the place – you can find loads of how-tos all over the internet.  I’ve been surprised at how easy this has been to work on so far.  It’s a great project for using small-ish pieces of fabric and even smaller bits for the letters.

Pen4

I used Heat N Bond, an iron-on adhesive I bought at Joann’s, to affix the fabric letters to the pennant triangles.  Then I had to Jenn Maruska it up with embroidered outlines.  I used a simple back stitch.

I think that makes the letters stand out better.

(Hmmm.. whose little feet are casting a shadow on my work table?)

Isabella’s!

Now I’ve just got to hunt down the right ribbon or bias tape to string the pennants together.

I’ll post a photo when it’s finished.

Here’s an even simpler banner tutorial over at the Purl Bee.

Party on!

Two Spoonfuls: Little Bites

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Appetizers, Hors D’oeuvres, nibbles…. whatever you choose to call them, tasty little bite-sized foods are fun, easy to make and perfect to take along to holiday get-togethers.

This week I’ve made two little bites, the first being Cherubs on Horseback.

Cherubs on Horseback are so ridiculously easy to make, that you could ask one of your kids to make them while you’re in the kitchen. They only require two ingredients: dried apricots and bacon. After these have been baked you’ll be treated to a delicious mix of salty and sweet.

There are many recipes for this treat on the internet and they are all very much the same, so I’ll share a basic recipe here:

20 dried apricots, briefly soaked in warm water

10 slices of bacon

20 wooden toothpicks, presoaked in cold water

Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut the bacon in half crosswise. Run the back of a knife over the bacon to stretch it out a little (this will keep it from shrinking while it bakes). Wrap each apricot with one piece of bacon and secure with a toothpick. Place on a baking pan and bake until bacon is crisp, 10-15 minutes. Serve hot or warm.

The second recipe I tried was from my favorite hors d’oeuvres recipe book, simply titled:

Hors D’oeuvres, by Eric Treuille and Victoria Blashford-Snell.

I made Mini Cherry Tomato and Basil Pesto Galettes, which is just a fancy way of saying tomato and pesto on a puff pastry round. These were delicous, and wonderfully bite sized. Perfect for a quick, tasty bite.

You begin the recipe by creating fresh pesto, and since pesto recipes can also be found in abundance online,

I’ll share one with you here:

Simply take 1/2 cup fresh basil, 2 tablespoons pine nuts (I get mine in the bulk section of my grocery store. Pine nuts freeze well and thaw quickly.), 1 tablespoon olive oil and 4 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese; combine in a food processor or blender and pulse until the ingredients become a thick paste.

Done. You’ve just made pesto!

(Home made pesto – it’s easy!)

(I used a basic 2″ biscuit cutter. A fluted one would be even prettier.)

(I made galettes with pesto under the tomatoes and then some with the pesto on top. Putting the pesto under the tomatoes is the best way to go.)

* Jenn’s Notes *

The Cherubs on Horseback can be wrapped in advance and popped into the oven at the last minute. They are best served hot or warm, but you can reheat them in a warm oven if you have leftovers.

You can make as many Cherubs at a time as you’d like – these work as both a nice snack for two or an hors d’oeuvre for a large group.

I once made celery sticks stuffed with a cheesy filling for a party I was having. When I went to plate them, since the celery is rounded, they all wanted to roll over on the plate. What to do? I had to think of a way to prevent them from rolling, so I looked through my cupboards, found a bag of lentils, covered the bottom of the plate with them and ta-da!, the celery stayed upright.

Plating your little bites is easy and fun. You probably already have things in your pantry that you could use. Just look at the things that you have in a new way. Lentils are really great because they are pretty, come in a variety of colors and can be cheaply purchased at your grocery’s bulk section. Split peas work well. Rice and beans can be used, too.

Make sure that what you’re serving isn’t too sticky, or you’ll have little pieces of rice/lentils stuck to the bottom.

Here I’ve used plain rice in one dish and a combination of lentils and rice in the other:

It’s party time!

I Have Real Life Friends!

Thursday, May 24th, 2007
For all of you who have been following the saga of our anticipated LOST party…
It was a huge success!
We had an absolute blast!

This is a shot of everybody (minus yours truly – who took the photo) right before the pre-show started.

We tried out the Pina Colada Punch recipe that Christina recommended and it was very tasty! Thanks Christina!

We had oodles of food – as everyone surprised us by bringing munchies and drinks.

Sam and David also brought some lovely flowers with them.
Sam and Tam brought homemade key lime squares – yum.

And a gold star goes out to Anne Marie, Roger and John for showing some super DHARMA Initiative – check out these goodies they brought!

Isn’t that great?!? Check out the DHARMA peanut butter – fabulous!

David was the winner of our trivia contest.
He got the correct answer for all three questions!
Yay David!

Incase you’re curious, the questions were:

How many days have the castaways been on the island? (93)

How much was Hurley worth when he won the lottery?
($114 mil. He invested the money, so by the time of the plane crash he was worth $156 mil.)

What year was Sayid born? (1968)

I can’t really comment on the show itself. I really enjoyed it, but I’m still trying to wrap my brain around all the things that happened. Hope you all had a great evening!

Thanks to Sam and David, Roger and Anne Marie, Sam and Tam, and John for making our party so much fun!

Myself, John Cleese and a Cosmo…

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007
Sounds like a Johnny Carson set up, right?

I’m trying to think of a punchline for that, but, alas…
it’s only what got my kitchen clean yesterday : )

I threw in my Fawlty Towers dvds, mixed up a Cosmo and got to work!

(**Here’s a random fact for today: Josh and I know the man who did the cover art for this dvd set (Bob Conge) – his son is a good friend of ours who we met in college.)

This is one of those very rare occasions when I wish I didn’t have such a large kitchen. It is long and includes an office area and the clothes washer and dryer. So there are really three areas to tackle. And when I really decide to clean something – I try to get all the little nooks and crannies, so this kitchen can end up being an all day affair. Although, in all honesty I took alot of breaks and didn’t have many dishes to wash – so that helped.

These are not current photos of my kitchen – they were taken by the previous owners and definitely did a good job of selling the house before we even saw it in person.
I love to cook, so when I saw these photos I almost fainted!

The reason for all of this cleaning is that our LOST season finale party is this Wednesday and we are having 7 friends over to celebrate.

Here is my menu for the evening:

Curried Coconut Chicken Sticks from Hors D’Oeuvres

Veggies and Creamy Blue Cheese and Scallion Dip from Hors D’Oeuvres
Oven-Roasted Pulled Pork Sandwiches from Tyler Florence

Spicy Slaw from Tyler Florence

Skewered Mixed Fruits

Coconut Cupcakes from The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook

I’m still stuck for finding a great tropical drink. Last year I made some rum, fruit juice and crushed ice concoction – but it was a bit of a pain to have to keep blending the drinks in the blender all night.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good make-ahead or easy to put together tropical drink/punch? I would love to hear about any that you’ve tried and liked!

Sunday, Random Sunday

Sunday, May 20th, 2007
Hello!

Thanks to all of you who commiserated with me about the new postal changes.
It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who’s a little confused by it all.

Last night our “Party On The Balcony ‘Til 4:00 am And Yell Your Drunken Head Off!!!” neighbors were having a roarin’ good time. So, for those of you who have trackers on your blogs that tell you when people are logging into your site….. well, last night at 3:30 am that creepy internet lurker was ME. I’m owning up to it.

This week my blog may be a little light on the craft side. Josh and I are getting ready to host the LOST season finale at our house this Wednesday. We’ve got 7 people coming, and I am going to be crazy busy cleaning and planning/making dinner. I even scheduled a haircut for Tuesday – so you know it’s a special occasion!

Yesterday Josh and I went to a huge local costume shop and found these goodies for the party. I also have some groovy tropical patterned fabric for a table cloth that I will re-use from last year. And two paper pineapples from last year for that final festive touch
(can’t believe I’m actually devoting closet space for an entire year to two paper pineapples….).

Also decided to kick it up a notch this year and have a little trivia contest. And I just had to show you the MOST AWESOME SCORE we made at the costume shop! Actually, Josh spotted these – good eye, Josh! This is a package of LOTR party invitations – with Charlie on them!!! Are those completely fantastic, or what?!?
I can hardly bring myself to part with them : )

Last year Josh dressed up as John Locke from the show. He took some coffee grounds, tea and chocolate sauce to the collar and underarms of an old tan t-shirt that he had (trying to make the shirt look like it was grossly sweat stained). After he rubbed all of that stuff into it, we threw the shirt into the wash thinking that it would come out nicely stained – but we had a good laugh when that shirt came out of the wash completely clean! It looked brand new. So, we ended up going a little lighter with the staining technique and then just letting it air dry. It looked great, but Josh smelled like chocolate and coffee all night. I’m so sad that I didn’t get a photo of it : (

And more randomness:

I got an early birthday present last weekend! My birthday isn’t until July, but we were in one of our favorite shops in Fremont that sells work done by local artists, and I saw this painting (by Cheri O’Brien) and fell in love. Actually, I had spotted it the last time we were over there. But this time I said “my birthday is just around the corner…”

I love the dog’s face – and his crazy little toes. : )

Thanks to Ginny over at iSew for giving Chico a wonderful home!

Well – time to get back to cleaning.

Cheers!

Jenn : )
