It’s been nuts!

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Hi everybody! Thanks so much for all the Two Spoonfuls love, I think my next installment may be frosted pumpkin cupcakes next Friday, so stay tuned for those – yummy!

I’ve been away from my sewing machine lately, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t been keeping busy. I’ve had lots of domestic stuff to do, a weekend trip to Portland for a friend’s surprise birthday party. And when I’ve had a moments down time, I’ve been reading *this* (most entertaining!).

In October I signed up for a Mail Art swap hosted by Honeydew Studio. There are 16 participants and the goal is to send an original piece of artwork to each person. That’s 15 pieces of artwork for each person to make and send – right at the start of the holiday season – crazy, I know! But I’m really excited about it because it’s about time that I dusted off my brushes, paints and pencils and got back to my drafting table.

So far I’ve done 4 of the 15 pieces and here they are:

(Squirrel and Butterflies)

(Squirrel in Love)

(Squirrel in the Rain)

(Squirrel Birthday)

They are all about 3″x 4.5″ and were created with watercolor, pen & ink and colored pencil on heavy illustration board. I have this idea for eventually translating them into little woolfelt scenes (that’s why everything in the sky looks like it’s hanging by thread – I decided to illustrate them the way they would look in 3D.)

All 15 pieces are going to be squirrel themed, and to be honest I don’t really know where that came from. I’ve always enjoyed squirrels, but no more than any other woodland creature. Perhaps, like Picasso’s Blue Period, I seem to be having a temporary obsession with them. Just bear with me, only 11 more to go…

What have you been nuts about lately? What is your latest obsession?

I’d love to hear about them! : )

Good morning!
Hope you all had a nice weekend : )

Josh and I were out and about on Saturday. One of our stops was at the art supply store, where I bought some acrylic paint. I decided that my little thrifted jewelry cabinet that I’ve re-purposed to hold little bits and bobs in my studio,
needed to have orange knobs on the doors.

A few dabs with the paint brush and ta-da! Just a bit of color. I like it!
I cut a square of polka dot paper to cover the mirror on the inside.
(And that’s a very curious Poe on the upper left.)

We got up early on Sunday to go for a jog and discovered that the days predicted rain had already started. But that wasn’t so bad, since Josh brought home work to do over the weekend and I had ornaments that I wanted to finish sewing. At least we didn’t feel like we were missing out on much, since the weather was dreary.

Here is what I got done:

I have two sets of these pretty polka dots.
(You can click on the photo to see them larger.)

One set (so far) of these sage green with gold snowflakes.

And one set (so far) of these birds on blue.

Each ornament is topped with a wool felt star and a shiny little yellow bead.
I’ll be selling them in sets of five.

Monday morning I’m going to take a set to the post office to get an idea of how much shipping will be, and then I’ll list them in my shop Monday afternoon.
(* If you are interested in reserving a set – just click on my profile and send me an email :)

Sunday, Random Sunday

Sunday, May 20th, 2007
Hello!

Thanks to all of you who commiserated with me about the new postal changes.
It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who’s a little confused by it all.

Last night our “Party On The Balcony ‘Til 4:00 am And Yell Your Drunken Head Off!!!” neighbors were having a roarin’ good time. So, for those of you who have trackers on your blogs that tell you when people are logging into your site….. well, last night at 3:30 am that creepy internet lurker was ME. I’m owning up to it.

This week my blog may be a little light on the craft side. Josh and I are getting ready to host the LOST season finale at our house this Wednesday. We’ve got 7 people coming, and I am going to be crazy busy cleaning and planning/making dinner. I even scheduled a haircut for Tuesday – so you know it’s a special occasion!

Yesterday Josh and I went to a huge local costume shop and found these goodies for the party. I also have some groovy tropical patterned fabric for a table cloth that I will re-use from last year. And two paper pineapples from last year for that final festive touch
(can’t believe I’m actually devoting closet space for an entire year to two paper pineapples….).

Also decided to kick it up a notch this year and have a little trivia contest. And I just had to show you the MOST AWESOME SCORE we made at the costume shop! Actually, Josh spotted these – good eye, Josh! This is a package of LOTR party invitations – with Charlie on them!!! Are those completely fantastic, or what?!?
I can hardly bring myself to part with them : )

Last year Josh dressed up as John Locke from the show. He took some coffee grounds, tea and chocolate sauce to the collar and underarms of an old tan t-shirt that he had (trying to make the shirt look like it was grossly sweat stained). After he rubbed all of that stuff into it, we threw the shirt into the wash thinking that it would come out nicely stained – but we had a good laugh when that shirt came out of the wash completely clean! It looked brand new. So, we ended up going a little lighter with the staining technique and then just letting it air dry. It looked great, but Josh smelled like chocolate and coffee all night. I’m so sad that I didn’t get a photo of it : (

And more randomness:

I got an early birthday present last weekend! My birthday isn’t until July, but we were in one of our favorite shops in Fremont that sells work done by local artists, and I saw this painting (by Cheri O’Brien) and fell in love. Actually, I had spotted it the last time we were over there. But this time I said “my birthday is just around the corner…”

I love the dog’s face – and his crazy little toes. : )

Thanks to Ginny over at iSew for giving Chico a wonderful home!

Well – time to get back to cleaning.

Cheers!

Did you all have a good weekend?

Mine was spent doing some physical labor around the house. Josh and I cleaned up the front yard a bit and I carried bricks from the front of the house to the back garage – today my arms are even a little sore! : )

To be honest I’m not big on doing yard work. So, after the bricks were all moved, I went back inside and gave my kitchen pantry a good clean out (and if you look very closely, our cat Lucy was helping me – she is tucked in next to the baskets on the right, with her face turned away).

I don’t have any before photos. But I did get rid of alot of little things and a can of something that had expired a while ago. Funny how you can buy a canned good and the expiration date is so far in the future and you laugh and think:

“Ha! Like I’m still going to have this in 2005!”

Ah,…yeah.

Anyway…. I love to cook and try new foods. When Josh and I were house hunting and we found the house we are in now (our first home!) I immediately fell in love with the large kitchen and pantry. I even have a few drawers in my kitchen today that don’t have anything in them – can you believe that?!?

Neither can I.

So, I have been tagged by the wonderful Ginny and Mrs. Kwitty to list 7 random facts about myself. Hummmm. These will probably be pretty random.

1. I have naturally red hair.
(Growing up I think Charlie Brown from the Peanuts comics was in love with a “little red haired girl”. If my mom was reading the comics and came across that phrase, she would always read it out loud.)

2. When I was about 5 years old I sang a solo song in church that was recorded by a local radio station. Years later, when I went home to visit during college, my mom said that she had been out driving one day and heard that song on the radio.

3. I will try just about any food once.
This, however, is not one of those foods.

4. Do you want to talk about a poor sense of direction?
I can’t find my way out of a room that only has one door in it!

5. I’ve shaken hands with Henry Rollins.
(Whew! What a relief to be able to cross that off the list! Haha! I don’t actually own a single cd of his. Although I do own the dvd of Johnny Mnemonic – which he is in.)

6. I love sci-fi movies. LOVE THEM!!!

7. I once sent an email to my husband’s boss asking that my husband be excused from attending a Sexual Harassment Awareness meeting at his job.
I told him that he was already a good sexual harasser and I needed a rest.

8. I’m not afraid of snakes.

9. Nutella on a plain croissant – to die for.

10. I don’t actually know how to spell croissant. I had to look it up here.

11. I have always wanted to visit England. It calls to me.

12. In the past few years I have started to want to have a goat – so that I can make my own goat cheese. I love goat cheese and I saw a woman making her own on FoodNetwork.
Boy, was I jealous!

13. I can’t work a packing tape dispenser. I end up mummified (and cursing) wrapped in about 3 yards of mashed up tape. So I just peel it off the roll and cut it with scissors.

14. I get a little thrill of excitement each and every time I see that someone’s left me a comment on my blog.
Really.
Each time. : )

Wow! I did it!

And now I’m going to be a party pooper and not forward this list to 7 other people because, frankly, all the people I would have forwarded it to have already been tagged!

On Saturday my illustration board and paints arrived! Whoo hoo! So I will be painting sometime this week.

This morning I was over at the post office mailing out this custom order that I worked on last week. It’s travelling all the way to New York state (the state that I grew up in!)

Hope you all have a great Monday!
