Hello!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Hi there - I hope you all had a nice weekend.

Josh and I went to our new favorite sushi place for dinner on Saturday and then drove downtown and saw Paula Poundstone at the Moore - she was very funny.

Yesterday we stayed in. There was an America’s Next Top Model marathon on,

so I camped out infront of the tv and finished embroidering a flurry of these little guys:

I recently got my November issue of Cotton Time magazine.

Here, I’ll give you a peek inside!

Tiny ornaments - I may have to make these for next year.

An interactive felt book for kids - fun!

I think we should all take a day off and make fuzzy hedgehogs - who’s in?!?

Have a fabulous day!

Inspiration in Patches…

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I recently received my September 2008 issue of Cotton Time magazine.

Cotton Time is my favorite Japanese craft magazine.

This latest issue is filled with pages and pages of patchwork projects!

Here, you can take a peek!

Even the cover is cute!

Sorry for the shadows (afternoon sun).

There are pages of pretty quilt blocks.

A patchwork purse.

Teeny, tiny yo yos.

This last photo is from My Patchwork Time Vol. 3.

I may try to make this little basket… or a hundred of them!

: D

Cheers!

A Day Off

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008
Since I worked on little needlebooks ALL weekend, I gave myself yesterday off. We had a very nice day here, and I even went outside in the afternoon and worked on the back yard a little. It was nice to get outside and enjoy some sunshine.

Here is how the little owl needlebooks turned out. I used tiny beads for the eyes. (You can click on the photo to zoom, and don’t mind the purple mark on the right… that’s just some disappearing ink that hasn’t disappeared yet. Sometimes that stuff fades in seconds and sometimes it hangs around for awhile.)

So yesterday I decided to put aside my to-do list and instead,
worked on some random things that I just felt like doing.

In the morning I made good use of some small fabric scraps I’ve been saving.
I cut them into 1 1/4″ squares. In the future these will be part of more little quilts.

And in the afternoon I tackled my first Japanese sewing pattern. This is a little bag that I fell in love with almost a year ago. So cute! I’ve been meaning to give the “pattern” a try ever since. I say “pattern” because not only are the instructions all in Japanese, but this pattern didn’t even have much in the way of measurements. Some Japanese patterns give the measurements in centimeters, which is very helpful. But this one didn’t. So I was basically winging it on this one.

All-in-all I’m pretty happy with how my first attempt came out.
It’s not perfect, but now that I’ve done it, I know what to change on the next one.

When Josh saw it he started describing how he’d go about photographing it for the shop….. so I guess I’ll be making some of these in the future (??) He thinks I should make a little carrot coin purse to go with it…. I’ll have to add that to the long list of things on that to-do list of mine.

Now that I’m back to being “Frugal Jenn”,
I’ll show you a few things that I splurged on over the last couple weeks:

Isn’t this a lovely wrapping job?
What could be inside, little bird?

A button bouquet! From Lilfishstudios.
(She has a poppy bouquet in her shop right now - red and black, gorgeous!)

I bought this lovely necklace from deciduoussoul.
It is really pretty in person - the ribbon is such a nice touch.

And I bought “Lusty Lip Lush” from
DressGreen and I love it!
I also got her grapefruit exfoliating scrub and it is wonderful.
It’s fun to use, smells great and really does leave my skin so soft.
I went back and got her moisturizer, too!

Today I’m working on business card wallets and monster bath mitts….

….or was that monster card wallets and business bath mitts?

; )

Cheers!

Hello

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008
Hi everybody!

Things have been super busy over here.

My sewing machine has been getting alot of use lately
… and so have my poor hands.
(I’ve got the beginnings of two blisters on my right hand from scissor use!)

This is a custom order bookmark that I recently made,
for a girl who loves little grey cats and reading : )

I’m working on new needle books, pincushions
and sewing sets (tasket-pincushion-needlebook) for the shop.

I’m especially excited about the sets.
I’ve got bunny and hedgehog and puppy sets in the works.

Here’s a sneak peek at one of the hedgie taskets
(love that Japanese fabric and trim!
)

Don’t forget that the newest installment of
Lake Resort Nurse will be posted tomorrow.

And here’s a little something that might make you chuckle:

What Not To Crochet.

Enjoy!

P.S. Angie over at The Downtown Boutique has recently added one of my needlebooks to her list of favorites - thank you, Angie!
Check out The Downtown Boutique to see lots of pretty handmade items.
Her latest post is about a contest to win a collection of bath and body products!
(maybe there’s some hand lotion in there - I could sure use that!)

Good Morning!

After a week or so of modest posts,
(read: I couldn’t think of much to gab about…)
today I have lots to share with you : )

The first news I have to share is that today my friend Christina is having surgery.
I know lots of you have been over to her lovely beading blog: This Girl Beads.
I hope that you’ll all join me today in wishing that Christina have a safe and uncomplicated operation, and that her recovery is swift.

I’ll be sending her positive vibes all day long and I hope that you will, too.

I hope you feel better soon, Christina! : )

******************************************************************************

I have a wonderful update on another blog buddy, Christina B.
I posted a while ago that I was very concerned about her and her pregnancy.
Well, I am very, very happy to say that Christina made it to her due date and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy! You can see Christina and little Imanuel right *HERE*.

Yay! : )

******************************************************************************

Now for a bit of random stuff…

This week’s mail brought the November issue of Cotton Time and another Japanese embroidery book.

I got these from a fellow Etsyian: Chocolate Swirl.
They shipped promptly and my books arrived in great condition.
If you’re looking for Japanese books, trims and fabric
I recommend checking out their shop.

Thanks to a nice tip from Syko, I also discovered another Etsy shop: Matatabi.
They sell Japanese fabrics and trims.
I bought two different trims that I am very happy with.

*******************************************************************************

Yesterday I rec’d a wonderful package from LeeAnn filled with all sorts of goodness!

A second tin of Pumpkin Spice coffee (scrumdiddlyumtious!), fabric, buttons, trim… even the box it came in was cute! Thank you, LeeAnn!
Your wool and goodies will be in the mail later today : )

I’m really being spoiled by these coffee swaps….
there will be no living with me pretty soon!
I’ll be demanding fabric and goodies with everything!!!
: D Whoo hoo!

*******************************************************************************

This little button flower needlebook has finally made it’s way into my shop.

And here is a sneak peek of two new business card wallets I’ll be adding in the near future.

*******************************************************************************

And last, but not least…

Over the past few months I’ve had several folks ask about how Josh takes such nice photos of the products I list in my Etsy shop. Most recently, Kayla asked me about what camera(s) we use.

Well, Kayla, your timing was perfect!
Josh was taking product photos last night and decided to grab my little point and shoot and document what he was doing.

He’s written up his own blog post about our set up,
what camera and lens he uses, and also how he came to own the three huge lights that brighten things up around here.
(Being in Seattle - we can’t always count on bright, sunny days!)

Click *HERE* for a behind-the-scenes look at how my product photos are created.

Thanks, Josh, for sharing this info with everybody!

Have a great day!
Best wishes, Christina - I hope you’re feeling better soon!

Fun!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

Hello -

Josh and I have had a fun Saturday so far. We slept in (ummmmm) and then took a trip to Uwajimaya this morning. Uwajimaya is an Asian market located in downtown Seattle in the international district.

As we drove into the parking lot we noticed that the market validates parking for up to two hours. “Ha!” I laughed, “We won’t be here anywhere near two hours.”

As we left - the parking attendant was kind enough to overlook the fact that we had been there for 2 hours and 3 minutes…

I can’t help it - when I go there I just want to look at every single thing in the store. And before you know it - 2 hours have flown by. The front of the market is a grocery store - filled with beautiful produce and meats and seafoods, etc. Then there are shelves of non-perishables, a bakery, a bookstore, a Hello Kitty section and more. Then there is the sushi counter and the food court. We had a tasty lunch of chicken and rice and a little salad.

I wish I had taken my camera with me. I don’t have any photos of the market itself - but I can show you some of the goodies that I brought home:

I bought three new sewing/embroidery books and these two little pads of cute paper.

This book is filled with plush animal projects and is titled “The Cute Book“. Now, how could I pass that up?!? (This book is the only one that I bought that is in English - the other two are in Japanese.)

These are some of the foods that we brought home - some Pocky, bread and papaya cakes. I also found these little plastic containers that I’ll use in my studio. I can always use containers for buttons and little bits and doodads.

And this is a gift for my brother. Each April (when we remember to do it) we send each other something that we think will make the other person laugh. This package is filled with dried little fish and shrimp - heads, eyes and all, and it says “Let’s Party” on the package. It will go nicely with the belly-dancing instruction tape I got him a couple years ago.

Have a great weekend everyone!

What To Do…

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

So… Say you bought a canvas curtain from Ikea to hang infront of your washer and dryer so that when company comes over they aren’t looking at your laundry space. And say that canvas was about two feet too long. You would cut down the curtain and hem it…. and save the canvas. But what to do with it?

Well - last night I had an “a-ha” moment and came up with a quick project to put to use that perfectly good material.

I was in my studio and happened to glance over at my Cotton Time calendar (I know, anyone who has read more than a couple posts on this blog is like “shut up about the Cotton Time already!”) But I can’t help it. I practically did a happy dance when I was reading the latest issue and discovered that it came with a 2007 calendar and each month has instructions for a different craft project - yippee!!!!!

So anyway - inspired by February’s project I hunted around for that canvas and made up this little… what to call it… ah, “little basket” ( ? ). It’s about 4 1/2 inches tall.

Now, if you look closely you might notice that there are some problems with it. I posted before that mistakes happen and I am not too proud to admit to making them. A couple goofs were from never having made one of these before… and a couple others happened because I was watching Futurama while I was sewing this.

I’m going to use it anyway in my studio to hold little doo-dads. I have quite a bit of the canvas left still - I was thinking of maybe making a couple more with different dimensions and colors, maybe adding some pockets on the outside and posting them in my Etsy shop. Do you think anyone would want one?

Have a great weekend -

Jenn : )

Little Birds

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Hello All!

Not too much to report this Monday. The biggest news I have is that I walked over to our local book store today and pre-ordered the next Harry Potter book….I’m a big fan and I’m hoping that this one will be great (the last one was a bit of a tough read for me… *sniff*).

For those of you who’ve read previous posts here - you know how much I love the Japanese craft magazine Cotton Time. I don’t read Japanese but the photos are enough for me - I can sit and look through that magazine for ages!

I’ve decided to take a little break from making my sewing books and pincushions, and work on some small projects inspired by Cotton Time (and also work on my “plushie in a bag” project, too).

Last night I did some sketches for an idea I have - basically what I want to make is a piece of quilted fabric that will have small pockets on it to hold little things. And it will have a loop of ribbon so that it can be hung from a push pin or a nail.

I was thinking that the pockets will be fabric and have a little embroidered felt decoration. So, last night I started embroidering these little birds onto a light brown wool.

I’ve got to tinker around with the pocket sizes - I realized this morning that in my original sketches the pocket sizes are tiny. I’d like them to be small - but still functional.

I just thought it would be a cute accessory for my studio - and if I like how it comes out - maybe I’ll make a couple more to offer in my Etsy shop.

Now I’m off to the sewing machine!

Cheers!
