Busy Weekend…

Monday, December 10th, 2007
Did you all have a nice weekend?
I hope so!

Josh was working at home from morning until midnight all weekend,
so I stayed up with him and did a TON of sewing.

I had a custom order for a pincushion/needlebook set. Which inspired me to cut fabric to make more sets, since I don’t have any in the shop right now.

(I have at least a dozen of these Ikea baskets - love ‘em!)

The next thing I knew I’d cut fabric to make 25 pincushions and 25 needlebooks!

******************************************************************

I finished up the embroidery for these three new colors (yellow, grey and red)
of needlebooks (5 of each color, so 15 total).

(The fabric store calls this color “Corn Silk”… isn’t that pretty?)

*******************************************************************

And, I began final sketches for a new line of my large sized needlebooks.
There will be 7 or 8 embroidery designs total and each one will feature a girl involved in a different sewing activity. I’m going to make at least 4 of each design, (so at least 28 total), so it will be a little while before these are finished.

I’ve wanted to do a sewing themed set of books for some time now. I’ve tried sketching hands sewing and little scenes with spools of thread…. and I just wasn’t excited about what I came up with. Then one day I was looking through one of my Japanese embroidery books and found an image of a girl sewing. I modified the image slightly and then just ran with it - putting her in different sewing poses, like measuring, pinning, beading, plushie making, etc.
Finally, I’ve found my sewing themed set!

Here is a sneak peek of one of the sketches I did last night:

Should vs. Reality

Thursday, November 29th, 2007
Things I should be doing:

Making a Christmas shopping list and purchasing gifts.

Decorating for Christmas/signing Christmas cards.

Getting cards together for all of the family December birthdays.

Cleaning the downstairs.

Reading other people’s blogs and leaving comments.

Doing the accounting.

Drinking less coffee.

********************************************************************

Reality
(or “what I’m doing instead of all the ’shoulds’.”)

Designing a new line of needle books.
And cutting enough fabric to make 28 of them.

(Incase you are wondering… that’s 84 pieces of wool felt just for the pages!)

Thinking that the oatmeal container I emptied this morning would make a cute place to keep zippers - just by covering it in decorative paper.

(Now where’s that glue gun?)

Deciding if I should try making these cookies this afternoon.

(Yes. Because my afternoons are just filled with free time!)

Going over to Bambino’s and getting some coffee! ; )

*********************************************************************

I’m wishing you success with all of your “shoulds” and your reality!

Just Kinda Busy, Too.

Monday, November 26th, 2007
I by no means advocate copying someone else’s blog post title…
but in this case, iSew’s title “Just Kinda Busy” pretty much sums up life over here.

(I did try to make it my own by adding the “Too” there at the end - see how I did that?
It’s completely different!)

Yesterday I finished up three of my custom orders. Here is a quick photo I took of them this morning. I loved doing all that embroidery! A couple of these items I sold months ago - so I was reminded again why it’s so important to keep notes about what you make. I was so thankful that I had written down what color embroidery floss I used and how many threads for each part of the embroidery designs. I highly recommend keeping a notebook or sketch pad of how you make things.
You just never know when someone will ask you to duplicate something that you made months ago. ; )

These sets will soon be mailed to their new home in Arizona.

I have one more custom order in the works, but I’ve given myself the day off today. I’ve had a sore throat for the last couple days. It feels like I’m moving in slow motion.

If I don’t go to bed early tonight, I may work on this quick project. I volunteered to fix our friends Sam and David’s advent calendar. This morning I went over to Joann Fabrics and bought some metallic green floss.

Can you spot what needs to be fixed?
(You can click on the photo to zoom.)

**************************************************************************************

Here are two recent purchases of mine:

The first is this cute sheep fabric from Superbuzzy.

Don’t know what I’ll use it for yet. But how could I resist getting two yards of it?
I couldn’t!

And, looking over my small purse collection I noticed that I have several pretty springtime purses, about three different little black purses and a few tote bags. But no fall/winter handbag. So, when I saw Maia’s newest handbag, made of brown corduroy (oh, I love corduroy!)… I had to have it!

This bag is so nice! I love the loop and button on the front, and it’s one of those bags that you can just keep putting stuff in and it never seems to get too full. It has three pockets inside and still holds my wallet, misc stuff AND my umbrella. If you need a new bag or wallet - I highly recommend checking out Maia’s Etsy shop, Glass Beach. She is very nice and her craftsmanship is excellent : )

And last, but not least…

A few weeks ago I was reading Rebecca’s blog Thrifty Goodness, and spotted a book in one of her photos, that made me chuckle. Being a fabulous pal, Rebecca has sent me that very book! So I present to you: Lake Resort Nurse by Arlene Hale, (published in 1966 and retailing at $.40).

I am seriously considering sharing this book with you, my blog readers. There are 15 chapters total, so I’m thinking of offering a 2 chapter synopsis once a week, complete with my own observations and…. quite possibly, re-enactments of major plot points. I’m not sure if I’ll draw the characters, or re-create them in felt or just raid Josh’s action figure collection. That part remains to be seen.

What do you think?
Is anyone out there interested in the saucy tale of Reba the lake resort nurse?
Her rocky relationship with Skip, owner of a boat rental business?
Or Lee, the mysterious stranger who has recently come to town?
Sure you are….. ; )

Hope you are all doing well!

Cheers,

I’m Chatty Today!

Monday, October 29th, 2007
Hi there! Hope you all had a good weekend.

This past Friday was a big day for both Josh and I… but for different reasons.
Apple released Mac OS X Leopard, so Josh had plenty of fun computer-ing this weekend. And I got to attend a local twice yearly fabric and button sale, so I had plenty of fun fabric-ing this weekend : )

About a year and a half ago, while Josh and I were walking to our favorite coffee shop, we passed a row of buildings that we had passed (uneventfully) many, many times before. But on that day, there was a sign in one of the windows that read “Buttons! Buttons! Buttons!” and you know, my sewing radar must have been on because I spotted that sign immediately.

Now, I’m not usually a nosey parker, but I had to know what “Buttons! Buttons! Buttons!” meant. So, I took a deep breath and walked up to the door of the building and stepped inside.

Holy Cow! There were two entire rooms filled with buttons! And I don’t mean a couple of tables with bowls of buttons. I’m talking about floor to ceiling, carded buttons including vintage 1800’s to Japanese to bakelite, etc, etc… basically any kind of button you could ever imagine. Two rooms full.

I handed my coffee to Josh and mumbled: “You may want to go on home. I’m going to be here for awhile.” I was there for hours. Me and several other women just poured over cards and cards and cards of buttons. Heaven.

Two things happened that day that really changed Jenn Maruska Design and my whole creative process. First - I found the little hedgehog buttons that I eventually used to make these sewing sets.

That is where I believe my interest in embroidery really took off. I had done embroidery before, but I think this is when I decided that I wanted to include it in some way in most everything in my shop.

The sale is run by a local clothing designer. She has twice yearly sales where she offers remnants of her fabrics and buttons and trims to the public, inorder to make room for her new supplies.

The second thing that changed Jenn Maruska Design was that I got on the mailing list for future sales.

When the next sale happened I went and found that this time she was destashing all of her winter wools (as well as more buttons). And this is where I first bought the beautiful high-end wool that I now use exclusively to make my needlebooks.
I will never use anything less.

This past friday was her winter sale - so she had mostly cotton fabrics, trims and buttons. There were a few pieces of wool though, and I brought some home with me:

I bought all of the little hedgehog buttons that she had left, which weren’t many. But now I’ll be able to make a few more hedgie sets in the future. I also got some little glass mouse buttons, too.

This is a vintage French trim that I got for $3.
I probably won’t ever work up the nerve to cut it!

While Josh was computing this weekend, I reorganized my wool supply. I found that there were some colors that I have quite a bit of. So I cut some 5″ x 5″ squares.

I think later this week I’m going to offer a couple of these bundles in my shop.
There will be 10 pieces in each. These are the exact same wools* that I make my needlebooks out of and use for applique. (* the white square is woolblend felt.)

But first…. ever since Ginny blogged about finding General Foods International instant coffee in Pumpkin Spice Flavor… I have been on the lookout for some. This past weekend I went to a grocery store that I never go to looking for it. But to no avail. So. I am offering one of my 10 piece wool stacks to anyone who will mail me a tin of said Pumpkin Spice Flavor GFIC. Unopened, of course. You pay for the coffee and shipping. And as soon as I receive it I’ll send you the wool (and some other little goodies!) and pay for shipping on that. You can see a photo of the tin HERE. If you’re interested in this swap - just go to my profile and send me an email.
: )

In Orchid Watch 2007 news: we have blossoms!

They have just started to open.
You can see that they are a dark red and pretty orange color.

**************************************************************

And last, but not least. I recently went over to BuyHandmade.org and pledged to buy as many handmade items for the holidays (instead of mass produced) as possible. We did pretty good last year - with about 50% of our Christmas gifts coming from Etsy and local artists. I’m hoping to exceed that % this year!

Have a great day!

Happy Friday!

Is it me or did this week seem to go quickly? It flew by….
(and on the same note, could someone tell me what happened to September?)

A while back I was surprised to learn that I’d won a fabric give-away on Dinah’s wonderful blog: Miss Bufforfington (love that name!)

Dinah sent me these cute fabrics, which I’m sure will find their way into future projects. Thank you, Dinah!

I also did a little swap recently with Katie, of See Katie Sew. She mentioned that she had some extra trims that she could send my way. Well, not only did she send me some fabric and linen, but I was also in rick-rack heaven when I opened her swap package!

There was all sorts of rick-racky goodness in there! I truly hope that these were all extras that she didn’t need. And if so - what a great thing, that one person’s extras can be another person’s windfall. Thank you so much, Katie!
I will put them to good use, I promise. : )

I feel like I haven’t shared many works in progress with you guys lately. During the fall and winter months our family has alot of birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate, along with the holidays. And it seems the same holds true for my blog friends. Ginny over at iSew had her birthday in September. I got her gift out a little late, but now that I know she’s rec’d it, I can share a photo with you. This is the little monkey plush and bag I worked on in September for her:

(He’s just a little guy - around 3 inches (?) tall.)

And my sweet friend Christina is having her birthday TODAY!
Happy Birthday, Christina! I hope you’ll swing by her blog: This Girl Beads, and wish her a lovely day. You can also take a look at the beautiful gift her husband and son gave her…. the guys get an A+++ for this one!

*******************************************************************

I have another sewing book in the shop today.

I’m working on more of this design in blue, red and green.

Hope you all have a great day, and a restful, fun weekend!

Right On, Target!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

“I tried walking into a Target, but I missed.”
- From the late, great Mitch Hedberg
Over the weekend Josh and I made a much needed trip to Target.

Unfortunately, they had had a huge sale the day before, so some parts of the store were pretty picked over. But we managed to do okay.

Their baskets were 40% off and I bought one.

I didn’t realize I’d be filling it up so quickly. I’m doing a little swap with my friend Katie, and while I was going through my fabric stash I decided to separate out all my 30’s reproduction fabrics. They just fit into the basket.

And here is another Target find - and my first fashion shot (ha!) for the blog:
this cute polo shirt that I found in the girls section.

(That dark object on the bed is Lucy… somehow there’s always a cat in my photos!)

The shirt is super soft and has a cute pink embroidered owl detail. I didn’t want to try it on at the store and I wasn’t sure if “the girls” were going to fit… but I’m delighted to report that a girl’s size XL is a winner - and only cost $9.99!

I’m off to the post office - hope to have a true crafty post soon!

Happy Labor Day!

Monday, September 3rd, 2007
Hi there!

Hope you are all having a lovely long weekend.

I crept out of my studio on Saturday and spent the day cooking - which I love. We had our friends John and David over for dinner and a movie. I hadn’t made pasta in ages and felt like rolling up my sleeves and having a go.

I used to think that making pasta from scratch would be very difficult - but it’s not. I have a nifty little attachment for my KitchenAid mixer that rolls the pasta out in different thicknesses. And a wonderful (and easy!) recipe from Jamie Oliver’s: The Naked Chef Takes Off (which now that I’m getting the link, appears to be in paperback on Amazon at a really good price!) I made his recipe:
Stracci with gorgonzola, mascarpone, marjoram and walnuts.
Delish!

We had creme brulee for dessert. I had to try making that because I have a little kitchen torch that I hadn’t used yet and wanted to try out. This is a great dessert to make if you want a fun activity that your dinner guests can participate in. Each person can carmelize the sugar on their own dessert. With a torch.
Trust me on this one - the guys loved it!

**********************************************************************************************

Sewing wise, I want to get some more ornaments made for the fast approaching holiday season - so a few days ago I made this little tree ornament mock-up.
(It’s just a trial run - so please excuse the wanky off center tree trunk there.)

I’m going to make as many sets as I can in different color combinations
from the above sets of fabrics.

Today Pacific Fabrics is having a Labor Day sale of 25% off all of their fabrics. I got ribbon and fabric for the tree ornament project, a fuzzy orange to make plushies out of, more wool for sewing books and the dot fabric is a linen remnant… I’m thinking that may become little pouches at some point.

Now I’m off to order some yellow felt online and then get back to sewing!

Enjoy the day -

L.I.P (List In Progress)

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Yesterday was a productive day - but I also encountered some small obstacles to finishing my entire to-do list. So the list will take two days instead of one…

Ah, I’m okay with that.

It’s summer, after all. : )

I went through all my gathered fabric and ribbon for the lamb plushie.
I’ll be ordering some felt today for his (or her) little face, ears and maybe feet.

I cut more fabrics for new checkbook covers.

** Hey guys - would you like to help me decide something? Which way should I have this fabric facing on the front of the checkbooks (in the above photo) - the way I have it at the top or the way I have it at the bottom? I could really use your suggestions!

These are some of the buttons I’m thinking of using.
Something about the pale orange with the green and brown (the top one) intrigues me right now… is that a goofy color combination?

***********************************************************************************************

I was at JoAnn’s today to buy bias tape and (surprise!) they had buttons on sale! Yay!
And alot of these are favorites of mine. They will surely be used in the near future : )

They also had these cute Halloween bells - I’ve got to figure out a way to combine them with the beautiful pumpkin colored wool I found at Pacific Fabrics.

I’m off to work on the remainder of my list.
Let me know what ‘cha think of the checkbook fabric - top or bottom?

Thanks!

Jenn : )

P.S.
Check out iSew’s blog for a great zipper tutorial!
Fluffy Flowers is having a Harry Potter giveaway - whoo hoo!
And check out the cupcake love over at Feeling Stitchy - yummy!

A three day weekend for Josh and I to spend together : ) Yay!
And what a great guy I have. He went running with me this morning.

(Don’t make any assumptions here - we have only just started doing this. We run for 10 minutes. Five minutes out and then five back to the house. And if you reside in the Ballard/Phinney area I sincerely apologize for the wheezing and gasping you’ve had to endure as we lurch past your home in the wee hours...)

Then he walked over to the post office with me (and more on that in a minute!)
And then, we walked further to a new quilt shop that Josh told me he saw on the way home one night. My man spotted a quilt shop for me! I love this guy!

The shop was smallish - but very nice.
They had alot of fabrics that aren’t at Joann’s - so I’m very happy to have found them. And they are in walking distance of the house. (Oh dear.)

At the post office I had two packages waiting.
The first was this lovely Hanky Sachet that I ordered from Primrose Design.
I could smell it before I even opened the box.
It is quite large: about 6″ x 6″ and it smells divine.
I could really carry this around with me all day…..
(your can click on the photos to see them larger.)

And then my first purchase from Chet and Dot: this little Tissue Pouch. Adorable!

In other news…

I think I’ve finally found a source for good quality felt. And that would be A Child’s Dream Come True. I’ve known about them for some time, but I was under the (mistaken) impression that they only took fax/phone or mail orders. Wrong.
They are completely internet accessible, the quality of the felt is fabulous and they ship very quickly. If you are looking for good felt - I highly recommend them.
They have different kinds of felt, in various weights.
For what I make - I’ve chosen the Holland wool felt.

Epilogue II:

For those of you who read this post and wondered what would happen to a package sent to England for all of $2.00….. I am happy to say my buyer received her sewing book already! It all worked out very well. I am so pleased!
And I apologize, postal clerk guy, for doubting you.

We don’t have any major plans for the long weekend. Hopefully getting together with our friend John tonight. And I’d like to buy a walking foot for my sewing machine on Monday… and how convenient that Pacific Fabrics is almost next door to the Bernina shop… and having a 25% off sale on all their fabric?

Other than that - I have many projects to finish up. My goal is to have new things to list in the shop on Monday & Tuesday, including new sewing books, new taskets and checkbook covers.

Have a wonderful, safe long weekend.
Hope you have good weather and lots of fun where you are!

Best - Jenn : )

What To-Do List?

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007
This week began as one of those weeks where I was going to have a list of things that I would get done each day, without fail. And for the most part I have really gotten alot done so far. I cleaned out part of the basement, started to revive our dying ficus tree, cleaned out the fridge, etc.
But yesterday morning I decided to go online before I walked over to the grocery store and, while reading some of my favorite blogs, I came across this post by Jennifer over at her blog: The Felt Mouse.

On the screen was a recipe for a lovely looking dessert of Cherry Clafoutis.

In my hand was my To-Do list…. which I promptly crumbled up, threw over my shoulder and didn’t look back! Instead, I added the Cherry Clafoutis ingredients to my shopping list and headed to the market.

And here are the results:

* Note: Jennifer’s post mentions that the recipe calls for seeing ribbons during the mixing of the yolks and sugar. I think I saw ribbons. But I’m not positive.
I did have quite an interesting time getting a shot of the batter, as I held the running mixer in one hand and camera in the other!

And - it was delicious, by the way! Custardy and light. Wonderful!
Thanks for sharing that recipe, Jennifer : )

So, that was yesterday’s adventure.
I just added the to-dos that I didn’t cross off to today’s list.

In other news, I posted a bit about color a few days ago and then yesterday found these articles over at The Purl Bee. Aren’t the colors in that first photo just gorgeous?

And I found these pretty sweet fawn patterned fabrics in the new arrivals over at ReproDepot.

(Oh, and if you’re interested in how I made the photo layouts above - I took all the photos myself and then used the Leafletter site to arrange them in the boxes.
It was super easy to do - so don’t hesitate to give it a try : )

Cheers!

Jenn : )

(*Update: the clafoutis recipe can also be found in the latest Williams-Sonoma catalog on page #33. I just got mine today : )
