Welcome!

I’ve just been doing some embroidery. Come on in!

My name is Jenn and I am the creator of Jenn Maruska Design. I’m an artist and seamstress and I make cute and useful items for your workspace and home. About 10 years ago I made my first simple needlebook out of woolfelt. I’ve since modified the design and incorporated my own unique, hand embroidery as decoration. And I now use luxurious high-quality wools for the covers. My needlebooks, pincushions and taskets are well made and meant to last for years to come. I’m inspired by natural colors and Japanese design.

My needlebooks are perfect for anyone who quilts, beads, embroiders or sews.

You can use a tasket to hold your small supplies and tools.

I hand embroidered a spool of thread as decoration for this crafty pincushion.

Don’t forget about the door prize!

Leave me a comment to be entered into a drawing to win the pincushion below.

The winner will be announced here on Wednesday, Nov 5th.

Thank you so much for attending this Virtual Etsy Home Show!

I’d like to invite you to the next stop on your tour:

In Bloom…

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween.

We had friends over and made stew and an apple crostata, drank wine, played Risk and watched one really really really scary movie. We got only about a half dozen knocks on the door from little trick-or-treaters, but they were traveling in large groups this year - I hardly have any candy left. All in all a very enjoyable night!

I can’t believe it’s that time of year again - my orchids are all in bloom. I must be treating them well, as they are loaded with blossoms, pressed up against the windows to gather the light.

Orchid

Violet

Christmas Cactus

Can you believe that it’s November already? Neither can I.

Thank you to all the wonderful people who visited my shop this past month. I’m thrilled that so many of my needlebooks and taskets will be given as holiday gifts this year.

I’ve added my hand embroidered ornaments to the shop now. If you’re looking to decorate your tree with something made by a real person, topping your gifts with something that can’t be bought in a mall or giving friends a very special handmade gift, I hope you’ll consider these ornaments that I’ve lovingly made. : )

Have a wonderful weekend everybody!

Lets Get Cozy…

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Here in Seattle we are still having sunny days and warm afternoons.

But I can tell that the season is getting ready to change. There’s a certain feeling in the air, the way the light falls through the windows. My morning walk calls for a light jacket now. I love the Fall - it’s my favorite time of the year. Here in the Northwest we anticipate the leaves changing colors and more rainy days. I enjoy the colors of Fall, the delicious comfort foods, wearing sweaters, and chilly nights with blankets on the bed.

A few months ago I joined the Etsy Quiltsy Street Team. The Quiltsy Team is a group of Etsy sellers who enjoy quilting, sharing their ideas and knowledge and selling their handiwork. Right now I have two mini art quilts in my shop, which you can see *here*. Today I’d like to introduce you to a few of my fellow Quiltsy Team members and show you examples of their wonderful creations.

Did you know….?

* The technique of quilting dates back to ancient Egypt, and may be even older than that.

* A quilt made of a solid piece of fabric is called a “Whole Cloth” quilt.

The textures and patterns made by the quilting stitches are the decoration of the whole cloth quilt.

* The Log Cabin pattern consists of strips of fabric (which represent logs) sewn around a square center. Traditionally, this center square was red to symbolize the warm fire on the hearth of the cabin.

*****************************

Here is a great example of the beautiful colors of Fall, in this wall hanging created by Doodlebugquilts.

“Quilted Fall Leaves Wall Hanging”.

*****************************

I love to cook for family and friends this time of year.

Wouldn’t this look pretty decorating your dinner table?

This “Fall Tablerunner” was created by lmkquilts.

*****************************

Need a new bag to go with all of your Fall outfits?

Kimbuktu creates pretty pieced and quilted bags.

“Judie Black and White Quilted and Beaded Patchwork Bag”.

*****************************

This lovely pillow cover was created by Warmnfuzzies.

She made the top of this pillow completely by hand!

Wouldn’t this pillow look amazing on your favorite chair?

“Changing Seasons Hand-Sewn Cathedral Windows Pillow Cover”.

*****************************

After spending the summer out-and-about, Fall is all about gathering together again.

Nesting. Being with family and friends. Home.

Nelliej13 has created this beautiful heirloom lap quilt.

I think she sums up the spirit of home very nicely.

“Mary Engelbreit Tall Houses Quilt”.

Enjoy your day!

The Big 2-0-0!

Welcome to my 200th blog post!

Wow, they sure have gone by quickly!

200 posts ago I hesitated starting a blog because I didn’t think I’d have enough to gab about.
I don’t have a good history with “journaling”. I write in them for a week and then completely neglect them. What would I ever have to write about on a blog?

Well, the answer to that is any wacky thing that I choose - and it sure has been fun!

At about this time last year I was getting ready for my first craft fair.

I’ve written about a really fun road trip that Josh and I took in June.

And I recently finished a weekly book review, which was a total blast : )

Thanks to all who have stopped by and read whatever wacky topic
I’ve been chatting about each week.
It’s been a joy to read your comments and hear your ideas : )

In true blog style I’m doing a give away to celebrate my 200th post.
I’ve gathered some fun goodies to share.

(Dylan from 90210? It can’t get any hotter than that people!)

I didn’t photograph any fabric but never fear,
I’m sure a bit of that will be tossed in as well ; )

***********************************************************************

The kittens are recuperating well.
In fact, last night I didn’t get to sleep until about 1:00 am
because Poe kept finding little stuffed mice around the house,
carrying them to the bedroom and making alot of noise playing with them.
Each time I (sadly) took the mouse away and put it well out of reach,
then she’d find another and start all over again.
This morning there was a pile of 4 or 5 mice on top of the dresser.
She must be feeling better : )

For the last few days I’ve been working here and there on various sewing projects.

Yesterday I worked on my little squirrel quilts - what do you think?

(Little squirrel.)

(Little acorn.)

I still have a bit more to do on them, but they should be finished soon.

***********************************************************************

Here are some of my new favorite Etsy finds:

This gorgeous bag made by Sarahjanedesigns.

“Mouses Tea Party”, an original watercolor piece by Margiemoore.

And this sweet little wooden house made by Weewood.

**************************************************************************

Be sure to leave me a comment for a chance to win my give-away!

I’ll be checking back on Saturday to randomly choose a winner : )

Have a wonderful day!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007
I hope you are all having a wonderful fall Thanksgiving day!

Usually Josh and I host Thanksgiving dinner.
Which means that I spend the week before the big day cleaning, planning, shopping and cooking - as I’m sure many of you have been.

This year our friends Sam and David have offered to host,
so this past week I’ve been able to do some sewing.

Later today I’ll be making these Salmon Deviled Eggs and this Pumpkin Pie
to take with us when we go to Sam and David’s.
Both are a big hit with our crowd : )

**********************************************************************

Tomorrow I’ll be adding three new finished items to my Etsy shop.
Here’s a sneak peek just for you, my blog readers:
(You can click on the photos to zoom.)

This is my Kitten Sewing Set,
which includes a needlebook, pincushion and tasket for organizing all your sewing supplies. The kitten is playing with a ball of yarn : )

This is my Bumble Bee Sewing Set, which also includes a needlebook, pincushion and tasket. I had fun embroidering this little bee!

And these are my beaded present ornaments (they make great gift toppers, too!)

********************************************************************************************

I hope you all have a lovely day.

I feel like this year especially I have so many things to be thankful for.

Most of all my friends, my family and my Josh : )

Good Morning!

After a week or so of modest posts,
(read: I couldn’t think of much to gab about…)
today I have lots to share with you : )

The first news I have to share is that today my friend Christina is having surgery.
I know lots of you have been over to her lovely beading blog: This Girl Beads.
I hope that you’ll all join me today in wishing that Christina have a safe and uncomplicated operation, and that her recovery is swift.

I’ll be sending her positive vibes all day long and I hope that you will, too.

I hope you feel better soon, Christina! : )

******************************************************************************

I have a wonderful update on another blog buddy, Christina B.
I posted a while ago that I was very concerned about her and her pregnancy.
Well, I am very, very happy to say that Christina made it to her due date and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy! You can see Christina and little Imanuel right *HERE*.

Yay! : )

******************************************************************************

Now for a bit of random stuff…

This week’s mail brought the November issue of Cotton Time and another Japanese embroidery book.

I got these from a fellow Etsyian: Chocolate Swirl.
They shipped promptly and my books arrived in great condition.
If you’re looking for Japanese books, trims and fabric
I recommend checking out their shop.

Thanks to a nice tip from Syko, I also discovered another Etsy shop: Matatabi.
They sell Japanese fabrics and trims.
I bought two different trims that I am very happy with.

*******************************************************************************

Yesterday I rec’d a wonderful package from LeeAnn filled with all sorts of goodness!

A second tin of Pumpkin Spice coffee (scrumdiddlyumtious!), fabric, buttons, trim… even the box it came in was cute! Thank you, LeeAnn!
Your wool and goodies will be in the mail later today : )

I’m really being spoiled by these coffee swaps….
there will be no living with me pretty soon!
I’ll be demanding fabric and goodies with everything!!!
: D Whoo hoo!

*******************************************************************************

This little button flower needlebook has finally made it’s way into my shop.

And here is a sneak peek of two new business card wallets I’ll be adding in the near future.

*******************************************************************************

And last, but not least…

Over the past few months I’ve had several folks ask about how Josh takes such nice photos of the products I list in my Etsy shop. Most recently, Kayla asked me about what camera(s) we use.

Well, Kayla, your timing was perfect!
Josh was taking product photos last night and decided to grab my little point and shoot and document what he was doing.

He’s written up his own blog post about our set up,
what camera and lens he uses, and also how he came to own the three huge lights that brighten things up around here.
(Being in Seattle - we can’t always count on bright, sunny days!)

Click *HERE* for a behind-the-scenes look at how my product photos are created.

Thanks, Josh, for sharing this info with everybody!

Have a great day!
Best wishes, Christina - I hope you’re feeling better soon!

Jenn : )

Hi

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007
Today’s post is a modest one, as I’ve been working on some small projects lately and tinkering with some new items that I hope to be blogging about soon.

************************************************************

My orchid is now in full bloom.

*********************************************************************************

I finished binding two of these needlebooks.
Hopefully Josh can photograph them for me on Thursday.

*********************************************************************************

I recently made a little gift for a friend, but I didn’t have the right sized box to put it in.

Then I remembered that a couple weeks ago I was on Etsy and found this tutorial:
How To Make a Box Out of Paper.

Ta-Da!

Pretty cute, huh?
No tape, no glue. Just paper.
It was very easy to do.

So if you find yourself with a little gift to give and it needs a box,
you can just follow the link and learn how to make one!

Thanks, Etsy!

Jenn : )

A Little of This, A Little of That…

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007
Hello!

All my works in progress today are birthday gifts -
so I have no sewing photos to share….

Instead, I have a photo of the orchid that sits next to my sink in the kitchen.
I was watering it the other day and noticed that it has two stems coming out that will eventually have blossoms. This is the very first time that this orchid has had two blossoms at the same time.
I’ll post photos so that you can see it when the flowers are out!

*************************************************************************

I thought I’d share some good karma that has come my way - by linking to a few of my fellow Etsy bloggers, who are blogging about their shops:

I am very excited that my friend Jules is getting ready to offer pendants featuring her artwork over at her shop Tummyache. She also gave an interview that you can read *here*, in which she discloses the origins of her shops name
(I’ve always wondered why it’s named “Tummyache”, and now I know!)

Katie has been updating her shop, See Katie Sew, with her cute headbands -
I purchased my own recently, and you can see it right *here*.

Felicia at Fluffy Flowers is Feeling French (that’s alot of “F”s!) She’s been making adorable little sock girls to add to her shop, Fluffy Flowers.

Maria’s been working on little heart ornaments with teeth (yes, you read that right!), you can see them *here* and I sure do hope that there’ll be some going into her shop, Morrgan - because I might just have to have one!

Got a posh friend who’s having a baby? Ginny over at iSew has a new diaper bag which you can check out *here*…. made for a stylish baby and mama!

And finally, if you like birds and beading and embroidery - you should check out Christina’s latest Black Bird mini quilt over at her shop, Smooshy.

************************************************************************************************

And speaking of mini-quilts….
the folks at Etsy have been making some updates to the site. Here are some of the recent changes (you can find more information at the Storque.)

Bill pay has had some updates,
including a new format and easy to read ledger, among other things.

There’s a new feature that allows sellers to cancel a sale.

If you add your birthday to your profile…
Etsy will send you good wishes on your special day - you can also view avatars of other Etsyians who share your birthday, too.

And the category section has had some changes…
including my personal favorite: a “mini” subcategory in the quilt section!
(Yay! I’ve wanted this change for a long time - I love little quilts. In fact - here is the link so that you can see all the *mini quilts listed on Etsy* right now).

So, that’s all for now. I enjoyed sharing some good karma with you
and I hope this will inspire you to share some, too!

Best -

Jenn : )

A Little Celebration

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007
Today I am celebrating my 100th sale on Etsy!!!

I am very happy. I am also very grateful that I found Etsy. It has been a wonderful experience, meeting other creative people and making friends and having the opportunity to make my hand made items available to people all over the world. I appreciate all the hard work that the Etsy admins do and the services that they provide to sellers. What a wonderful thing Etsy is!

And I am especially grateful to all the wonderful people who have visited my shop and purchased the things that I have made. My customers have all been great and a few have become my friends and are especially dear to me : )

So, in addition to finishing up some sewing work, sketching work and possibly doing a custom order today, I am treating myself to this:

Josh brought me home this chocolate one day and it is some of the best I’ve ever tasted! If you have a large grocery store near you or a gourmet-ish specialty food shop I highly recommend seeking this out - it is delicious! I love the milk chocolate and the milk chocolate with bits of hazelnut : ) Yummy!

Thanks again to you all for visiting my blog and my Etsy shop.

And a HUGE thanks to my husband, Josh, for taking such fabulous photos for me!
(and finding fantastic chocolates!)

There are so many wonderful things to come!

Best - Jenn : )

* Bee Happy *

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

This morning I listed one of my business card wallets in the shop.
Thanks to Josh - who took some great photos for me last night.

It seems that I am enamored with bumblebees lately. I looked around Etsy this morning and found these sweet bee goodies:

This adorable little knit hat from Knittybittyapparel.

These cool gift tags from Prettyful.

This little painting by Pumpkinseedsfolkart.

And this pretty necklace from Puffluna.

: ) Bee nice to one another and have a great day!

Jenn
