….cards, that is.

711.jpg

Recently I had new business cards made at a local print shop.

1,500 of them, to be exact.

The folks at Evolution let us check out their printing equipment when we were there, and we noticed that two cards were being cut out of each piece of card stock that they ran through their machines. Each piece of card stock has registration marks printed on it, in the same colors as my business cards. Josh asked if we could take these leftover pieces of card stock with us, and the folks at Evolution said “Sure.”

Meanwhile, I was thinking:

“What the heck am I going to do with 1,500 scrap pieces of card stock??”.

Well, here’s one idea that I came up with:

712.jpg

I cut down the card stock into strips and then small pieces.

(Two random facts about this paper cutter:

1.) It was a dumpster find in college, in perfectly good condition.

2.) If I set it on the floor, within minutes I will bang my ankle on one of it’s sharp corners.

I swear it attacks me. )

713.jpg

Using a corner rounder that I got at Paper Zone,

I rounded the corners of each little paper piece.

Then I printed “Thank You” on each piece with this teeny, tiny stamp

that I purchased from Ali’s Attic on Etsy.

714.jpg

Punch a hole in the tag, thread through some twine and ta-da!

715.jpg

From one scrap piece of card stock - this is all that’s left.

(Now, what to do with the other 1, 499 pieces…. Ha!)

Thanks to Josh for thinking fast and saving this paper from being thrown out!

This month I am very excited to be advertising on a great blog: Rare Bird Finds.

This blog is really fun - they update often with neat and interesting products.

If you check out the site - you’ll see my ad at the upper right.

Josh put the ad together using four of my product images.

I think he did a wonderful job. : )

Hi All!

I’ve been working on bath mitts….up until last night when sewing came to a screeching halt. The nice gal at the Bernina shop tells me that the machine’s timing is off - resulting in straight stitching lines only… and I really need the zigzag and serge. She says Nina’s visit will take about a week - but hopefully it will be quicker than that. In the meantime… I have lots of hand embroidery I can work on, including some new holiday ornaments I’ve started - to use up tiny bits of scrap fabric and wool. Here’s a quick photo of one:

624.jpg

And here are my finished business cards!!! Yay!

I’m very happy with how they look.

625.jpg

We just have to finalize a couple things with the label company

and then my new labels will be in production - whoo hoo!

Hope you have a great day!

What’s New

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Earlier this week Josh and I went over to Evolution, where my business cards are being printed. We did a press check on the color for the back of the cards. I had to give the okay on the color, and I got to take one of the sheets home with me. The card stock is an oatmeal color that has tiny threads in it. This will be the back of the cards, soon we’ll do a check on the fronts.

Yay - I can’t wait to see them finished!

If you saw my last post, I’ve been having some problems with uploading photos to my blog. For the last couple days I haven’t been able to upload them at all. Josh and I have gotten around this by using a program called Ecto. Ecto works with Flickr to not only make photo uploading easier, it also decreases the amount of time it takes to publish the entire blog post. Another problem I was having was that, on occasion I would upload my photos, type up all my text and get everything spaced and arranged the way I wanted it - only to discover that I wanted to include one more photo. If I then added any additional photos - all of the spacing in the blog post I was working on would be undone. Everything that I had typed would be mashed together in one big paragraph and I’d have to redo all the spacing. (Blog posting takes enough time as it is without that kind of hassle!) Ecto lets you create your entire blog post independently of Blogger. I can click and drag photos and play with the layout to my heart’s content and then publish. Adding photos doesn’t effect your text. Whew! I think this is going to work out much, much better!

Since I couldn’t do any blog posting myself, I got to catch up on a bit of blog reading.

I was over at Mrs. Kwitty’s blog and saw that she’s been doing some spring cleaning, which inspired me to do some, too.

Mrs. Kwitty has been reorganizing her rick-rack collection (which is quite impressive, I must say!) and by coincidence, my own rick-rack has outgrown the glass jar I’ve been keeping it in.

Weeks (or maybe months?) ago I thrifted a long wooden box that was filled with projector slide boxes. Yesterday I decided that it would be perfect for keeping my rick-rack in. I lined the bottom with pretty paper and here it is:

Much better!

(Josh is using the slide boxes to keep Legos in.)

Thanks for the organization motivation, Mrs. Kwitty! : )

Oh, this baby blanket is very warm and snuggly soft!

This lovely set is for friends of ours who have their first baby on the way.

When I saw this blanket, matching booties and bib in Ginny’s Etsy shop,

I had to scoop them up!

They are so pretty and well made! Right now Ginny has some very cute bibs in her shop.

I’m especially fond of this one !

Cheers!

“MOO!”

My Moo stickers have arrived - Yay!

How do they look, little bird?

My stickers are all examples of embroidery that I’ve done.

Won’t they look cute on my little goody bags that I include with my orders?
(I get my little cello bags from Uline.)

Moo stickers are very easy to create and order.

They cost $10.00 + shipping for 90 custom stickers.
That is about $0.11 + shipping per sticker - not bad for a cute bit of promotion.

Next time I make a set, I’m going to add text to the image
.

** Now I need a little help from one of you! **

I’d like to test out the buying/selling process over at my new shop at iCraft.

I’ve listed this business card wallet in my iCraft shop.

I usually sell my wallets for $8 +, but for this test
I’ve reduced the price by 50% and I’m offering
free shipping.

I will mail out the wallet, just like I do all of my items
(including free candy and a new Moo sticker!)/span>.

Don’t need a wallet for yourself?
Give it to your daughter or niece - heck, it’s only $4!

Signing up for an iCraft buyer’s account is easy.
You’ll need to enter your address & phone, an email and password.
Standard stuff.

Here is the direct link to my shop there: * Jenn at iCraft *

Thanks in advance to whoever chooses to help me out - I appreciate it! : )

**Update: Lovely LeeAnn is officially my first iCraft customer!

Thank you so much LeeAnn : )

Have a great day, everyone!

(For those of you who are just joining iCraft: I emailed them yesterday, asking about a searchable directory for sellers. They responded quickly with a very nice email letting me know that they are working on that now! You can also check their Community section for current news about the site.)

When it’s time to change…

Martha Rule # 5:

“All dressed up and ready to grow”

“Use smart, cost-effective promotional techniques that will arrest the eye, tug at the heart, and convey what is unique and special about your business or service.”

Ah, this is one aspect of Jenn Maruska Design that really needed to be tackled.
In an effort to figure out just what my business is all about and to save money in the meantime, Josh and I have been our own marketing team. We’ve been creating fabric labels, using printable fabric sheets bought online. We’ve printed business cards here on our home printer. And I’ve been addressing bubble mailers at night while we watch tv.

These are adequate, low-cost methods to begin creating a “brand” for the business, and I recommend using these techniques when you’re just starting out or are considering a change in direction.

For me, the time has come to commit and upgrade. My first step was to work with a label maker to create new fabric labels for the items that I create. Unfortunately, after 2+ months of negotiations, $500 and much frustration – I still have no labels. We’ve now contacted two new label makers to begin the process again – hopefully with better results this time around. I will be blogging about the experience in the future, and I intend to let you know more details, but I am waiting to do this, so that I will be able to recommend a good label maker. *If you are about to invest in professional grade labels for your own business – feel free to email me.

Josh spent alot of time this weekend making changes to my current logo and creating variations for labels, business cards, avatars, banners, stamps, etc.

Did I ever show you this paper mache lemon that I have in my studio?

It says “Life….make lemonade” on it.

Sometimes, you just never know when an unfortunate experience can be hiding a tiny grain of goodness. Take my frustrating label experience, for example. I was in tears the day I realized that all the time, effort and money I had invested in that endeavor was for nothing. But now, months later, I am smiling because Josh’s new design for my labels is better than what we had, and I like them so much more. That unfortunate experience forced me to step back and wait, and ultimately, Josh created an even better design.

Yesterday we contacted a local printer and I have an order in for 1500 new business cards. (This will save alot of time for Josh, who’s been printing my cards for me, and will also save wear and tear on the printer.)

We also went to a local rubber stamp maker and ordered a return address stamp and a “to” address stamp – both incorporating my flower logo image. This was super easy - we were in the shop for less than 10 minutes! We chose to use a local stamp maker, but you can also find custom stamp makers on Etsy. Sweet Paperie is one that iSew recommends. Not having to hand write my return address on each of my out going packages will be a big time saver for me!

I also ordered a book of Moo stickers, featuring images of my embroidery work.
Creating the Moo promotional products is very easy. If you aren’t a “computer person”, never fear! I was amazed at how quick and easy it was to order my stickers – the most difficult part was deciding what images I wanted to use.

In keeping with my New Year’s business resolutions, I’ve joined another online selling venue called iCraft. So far I have just one item in my shop there, but I expect to be adding more as the year goes on. I’ll keep you posted on any new additions there.

***********************************************************************

Thank you Josh, for helping me with my logo design.

I am very excited about these changes and I can’t wait to share them with you.
As new things arrive, I’ll be sure to show them here and pass along recommendations.

I hope you all have a happy and creative day : )

Now – it’s back to the studio for me!

Best,

Jenn : )

Oh, Reba!

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Sorry, folks.
Reba had a few too many $0.10 cokes recently
and didn’t make it to her photo shoot last night.
Never fear though, the next installment of Lake Resort Nurse will be here tomorrow!

Thanks to everyone for your nice comments on my last post.
I am so happy to have those two bags in my shop.
They were very fun to make and alot of love went into them.
I wish you could feel how soft and yet sturdy they are.

Yesterday I almost completely ignored my To-Do list and instead,
I spent most of the day making new business card wallets.

Then I sat down to embroider some hedgehogs and found that I was
almost completely out of brown embroidery floss. So this morning,
with fist full of 40% off coupons, I raided Joanns and stocked up.

My shop recently received its 1000th heart from a kind fellow Etsyian!
Yay! Thank you to everyone who has “hearted” my store : )

And I will soon be reaching my 200th blog post.
So, I guess I’ll have to go through my fabric stash and get ready for a give away!
Be on the lookout for that - I think another 5 posts should do it.

Hope you’re all having a terrific day!

Don’t forget the season finale of Project Runway is on tonight!!!

Cheers!

This morning I listed one of my business card wallets in the shop.
Thanks to Josh - who took some great photos for me last night.

It seems that I am enamored with bumblebees lately. I looked around Etsy this morning and found these sweet bee goodies:

This adorable little knit hat from Knittybittyapparel.

These cool gift tags from Prettyful.

This little painting by Pumpkinseedsfolkart.

And this pretty necklace from Puffluna.

: ) Bee nice to one another and have a great day!

Good morning! Hope you all had a great weekend.

I was in my studio all weekend sewing sewing sewing.

I’m happy to say that all the taskets that I started are now finished. I ended up with 11 - but I could probably make 1 or 2 more - after I take a break from them.

I want to say a big “Thank you!” to Lisa for her wonderful words of advice about craft fair goodies. She suggested that I make some smaller items to have on hand for “impulse buys”. Business card wallets were mentioned and it just so happens that about six months ago I had an Etsy customer request that I make her a business card wallet. So on Sunday I went through my sketch book and found my notes for that project, gathered together wool and felt and my precious special trims from Superbuzzy and got to work.

Here is what I have done so far (you can click on the photo to zoom). Four little doggie wallets and the rest say “Here You Are” with a little bee decoration. I still have to sew on the pockets - that will be one of today’s tasks. I’m quite pleased with them - Josh likes the doggie ones : )

There must have been something in the air this weekend - a hint of spring, maybe? - because I sold my last two Butterfly pincushion/sewing book sets. I’ll wrap these up and get them in the mail later this morning.

And one more thing I am super excited about: I have joined in on the Spring Fling Swap that I found over at Sweet Goodness Swaps! As I’ve been exploring lots of wonderful craft blogs I keep reading about all these swaps that people are doing…. and seeing all of the gorgeous goodies people are getting in their mailboxes… and I’m thinking “gosh that sounds like fun - how can I get in on the action!?” Somehow one day I found myself at Sweet Goodness Swaps and to my delight I hadn’t missed the deadline for the Spring Fling Swap : )

The color theme is pink and green (yummy). And I have a wonderful swap partner - Rebecca! She has a great blog called Thrifty Goodness - very fun and lots of photos. And from what she’s been blogging about she may soon be a fellow Etsyian - whoo hoo! I’ve almost finished making my first swap item, Rebecca - can’t wait for you to see it : )

Well - I’m off to the post office and then back to my studio. Nina is really getting a workout lately - I’m sure she’ll be happy to have Saturday off!
