Ah… Oxygen!

Monday, March 31st, 2008
This morning I woke up and I could breathe again!
Sweet, sweet oxygen, how I’ve missed you : )

Thank you everybody for your well wishes!
I am sure that your positive energy has helped me to start feeling better.

Saturday was rough. I was in bed all day. The cats took turns curling up next to me. Sunday started off the same, but as the day went on I started to perk up a bit, and by the early evening I was back in my studio! Whoo hoo!

I’ve noticed over the years that I definitely have creative highs and lows.
I am right in the middle of one of these highs (which made being sick even more frustrating). I have more ideas than time to create them. I’ve been doing alot of sketching and planning.

I’ve had an idea in the back of my mind for another kind of sewing organizer that I’d like to try making. Last night I got out my muslin and made up a prototype.

This is a folding “book” style organizer.

Inside, on the first panel are ribbon loops to hold embroidery thread, on the second panel I’ve made a pocket that closes - to hold buttons and little bits and bobs
(I’ve decided that this could be bigger, to hold more.)

and on the third panel there’s a flap of felt that can hold pins (the photo shows it closed - the flap lifts up and there is another layer of felt beneath it.)

Along the bottom are pockets in various widths to hold pens, floss, cloth - you name it. And I even made a little pincushion that will match the fabric of the organizer. Oh - and one of my favorite features - between the 1st and 2nd panel is a button and cord. You can put the cord through the hole of a spool of thread, then wind the end of the cord around the button and keep the thread safe and snug inside the organizer! So clever! (I wish I could take credit for thinking that up… but I actually saw it in one of my Japanese craft books. It’s such a good idea, I had to include it.)

I would very much like to make more of these and put them in my shop.
What do you think of this design?
Do you like this style of organizing sewing supplies?

As I’m writing this, I’m trying out something new.
I would love any feedback you all could give me on what fabric colors and styles you prefer. I’m creating a very short pop-up survey and I would be grateful to any of you who would take a moment to answer two questions. : ) Thanks in advance!

(This survey should pop-up when you load this page.
If it doesn’t come up, then you may have a pop-up blocker working.)

Now I’m off to the post office.
Then back to my studio to work on bath mitts! Yay!

Have a great day!

Best, Jenn : )

The Future

Saturday, March 29th, 2008
This morning Josh and I got out and took care of some errands
(I know I’ve typed that many times before. I think these early Saturday morning errands are one way that we re-connect after a long week, esp. one where we haven’t seen much of each other.)

This was actually the first time I’ve been out of the house in days…
I have caught a really bad head cold and haven’t been able to breathe lately.
Not breathing can really slow a gal down.

I had to get out though, I was really running out of the sewing basics here….

Needles and bobbins.

The Bernina store that I go to has a program where your purchases (including getting your machine tuned up) are recorded and after you’ve spent a certain amount you receive a $10 credit for almost anything in the store.
Today I got $10 worth of thread - for free!
(It almost made the trip out with watery eyes and a drippy nose worth it.)

Nearby is Pacific Fabrics. I needed to stop in there for embroidery floss and more thread. Of course, I’d have to be near death not to give the remnant bin a thorough going through. Here are two that I brought home.

I don’t know what these will be in the future….

….but this is surely in my future.

Jenn Maruska Design is closed for the weekend.
The employee has taken sick leave.
The receptionist is not taking phone calls.
I’m going to bed.

Jenn *a-choo!*

Thread Head

Thursday, March 27th, 2008
I know I’ve been sewing alot when I wake up,

go to brush my teeth,

look in the mirror,

and see a thread from my last sewing project nestled in my hair.

How do you know when you’ve been crafting alot?

Jenn ; )

A Day Off

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008
Since I worked on little needlebooks ALL weekend, I gave myself yesterday off. We had a very nice day here, and I even went outside in the afternoon and worked on the back yard a little. It was nice to get outside and enjoy some sunshine.

Here is how the little owl needlebooks turned out. I used tiny beads for the eyes. (You can click on the photo to zoom, and don’t mind the purple mark on the right… that’s just some disappearing ink that hasn’t disappeared yet. Sometimes that stuff fades in seconds and sometimes it hangs around for awhile.)

So yesterday I decided to put aside my to-do list and instead,
worked on some random things that I just felt like doing.

In the morning I made good use of some small fabric scraps I’ve been saving.
I cut them into 1 1/4″ squares. In the future these will be part of more little quilts.

And in the afternoon I tackled my first Japanese sewing pattern. This is a little bag that I fell in love with almost a year ago. So cute! I’ve been meaning to give the “pattern” a try ever since. I say “pattern” because not only are the instructions all in Japanese, but this pattern didn’t even have much in the way of measurements. Some Japanese patterns give the measurements in centimeters, which is very helpful. But this one didn’t. So I was basically winging it on this one.

All-in-all I’m pretty happy with how my first attempt came out.
It’s not perfect, but now that I’ve done it, I know what to change on the next one.

When Josh saw it he started describing how he’d go about photographing it for the shop….. so I guess I’ll be making some of these in the future (??) He thinks I should make a little carrot coin purse to go with it…. I’ll have to add that to the long list of things on that to-do list of mine.

: )

******************************************************************************

Now that I’m back to being “Frugal Jenn”,
I’ll show you a few things that I splurged on over the last couple weeks:

Isn’t this a lovely wrapping job?
What could be inside, little bird?

A button bouquet! From Lilfishstudios.
(She has a poppy bouquet in her shop right now - red and black, gorgeous!)

I bought this lovely necklace from deciduoussoul.
It is really pretty in person - the ribbon is such a nice touch.

And I bought “Lusty Lip Lush” from
DressGreen and I love it!
I also got her grapefruit exfoliating scrub and it is wonderful.
It’s fun to use, smells great and really does leave my skin so soft.
I went back and got her moisturizer, too!

**********************************************************************

Today I’m working on business card wallets and monster bath mitts….

….or was that monster card wallets and business bath mitts?

; )

Cheers!

Jenn

This is Rain?!?

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008
Sorry checkout clerk at Ballard Market,
but if this is the “rain” you were talking about for today,
I’ll take it!

Right now it is gorgeous out! Sunny and lovely.
I can even hear our neighbors outside with a radio on,
so it must be nice.

That’s not to say that things won’t change. And they usually do, very quickly.
But for the moment I am thoroughly loving all this “rain” that we’re having : )

My random number generator (aka my husband, Josh) is at work today,
so I went online and found a comparable, but not as fun, substitute.
And the lucky winner of my 200th blog post give-away is:

** Mandi **

Congratulations, Mandi!
You can go to my profile and send me an email with your address
and I’ll pack up a fun goody package for you : )

And thanks to everyone who dropped by and celebrated with me!

*******************************************************************

I’ve been able to get alot of sewing work done this past week.
Due in part to the kitties recovering. They’ve been on soft food only for the past week, so we weren’t able to just fill their food bowl and take off. I’ve been feeding them soft food 3 or 4 times a day and staying close to home.

Here are some things I’ve finished recently:

My two little squirrel quilts - all done!

I made five of these needlebooks using some beautiful Pendleton wool
(it looks very blue, but it actually leans towards “peacock”, it’s really gorgeous.)

**************************************************************************************

The other day I was reading an interesting article about the recession that so many people are talking about. Some people say we are already in one, others are predicting that it’s on the horizon and some folks think it’s not going to happen at all.

To be honest, the last couple weeks have been kind of emotional and upsetting around here, and I’ve been treating myself to a bit of retail therapy. (I’ll show you my little indulgences in an upcoming blog post.) Shopping isn’t something that I do alot of, and now that things are looking a little sunnier here (even despite all this “rain”), I’m going back to being frugal again.

The article I was reading was about how the rising cost of gasoline may actually “fuel” online sales, if shoppers decide to stay in and shop online and not drive if they don’t have to. The article gave some tips on how online sellers can survive this turn in the economy. One way is to make sure that you have a wide range of prices in your inventory and to offer lower priced items if you don’t already.

I thought this part of the article was very interesting:
that a person may walk into a gallery (for example) and not buy a large expensive piece of artwork, but they often do purchase smaller, less expensive items (such as prints) because “they want a piece of the experience”. That phrase has been rattling around in my head for the past two days. Because it’s so true. I’ve shopped that way. As a buyer it’s a way to say “Hey, I enjoy this, and I’m a part of it and I appreciate what this is just as much as the guy who can pay more for it. I’m part of this, too.”

Of course the article not only made me think about how I shop, but also how I sell. And, even though my shop isn’t filled with wallet busting things, I think I could have more “piece of the experience” items, too. So last night I worked on some new needlebooks that all have my Jenn Maruska style embroidery, but are smaller and can be priced on the lower end of the scale.

There are three designs: a flower, a spool of thread and a little owl
(he’s still just a sketch there at the top).

So, what do you think of all this recession talk?

Are you changing the way you shop?

*************************************************************************

Poe is yowling at me - so I think it may be time for some kitty food.

Then I’ll be embroidering some little owls.

Next on the list is making a new bath mitt prototype. I want to be absolutely sure that the finishing on the seams will hold together through many, many uses. I may throw this one into the wash and dry a few times and see how he fares. I got feedback from my two little bath mitt testers (funny story - one is a little girl, 5 years old, and the first thing that she did with the bath mitt was use it as a little purse!) I’ve got a stack of blue and green towels in my studio - just waiting to become bath monsters.

(Don’t worry N, they’re coming!)

Have a great day!

Jenn : )

The Big 2-0-0!

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Welcome to my 200th blog post!

Wow, they sure have gone by quickly!

200 posts ago I hesitated starting a blog because I didn’t think I’d have enough to gab about.
I don’t have a good history with “journaling”. I write in them for a week and then completely neglect them. What would I ever have to write about on a blog?

Well, the answer to that is any wacky thing that I choose - and it sure has been fun!

At about this time last year I was getting ready for my first craft fair.

I’ve written about a really fun road trip that Josh and I took in June.

And I recently finished a weekly book review, which was a total blast : )

Thanks to all who have stopped by and read whatever wacky topic
I’ve been chatting about each week.
It’s been a joy to read your comments and hear your ideas : )

In true blog style I’m doing a give away to celebrate my 200th post.
I’ve gathered some fun goodies to share.

(Dylan from 90210? It can’t get any hotter than that people!)

I didn’t photograph any fabric but never fear,
I’m sure a bit of that will be tossed in as well ; )

***********************************************************************

The kittens are recuperating well.
In fact, last night I didn’t get to sleep until about 1:00 am
because Poe kept finding little stuffed mice around the house,
carrying them to the bedroom and making alot of noise playing with them.
Each time I (sadly) took the mouse away and put it well out of reach,
then she’d find another and start all over again.
This morning there was a pile of 4 or 5 mice on top of the dresser.
She must be feeling better : )

For the last few days I’ve been working here and there on various sewing projects.

Yesterday I worked on my little squirrel quilts - what do you think?

(Little squirrel.)

(Little acorn.)

I still have a bit more to do on them, but they should be finished soon.

***********************************************************************

Here are some of my new favorite Etsy finds:

This gorgeous bag made by Sarahjanedesigns.

“Mouses Tea Party”, an original watercolor piece by Margiemoore.

And this sweet little wooden house made by Weewood.

**************************************************************************

Be sure to leave me a comment for a chance to win my give-away!

I’ll be checking back on Saturday to randomly choose a winner : )

Have a wonderful day!

Jenn : )

And The Winner Is….

Friday, March 14th, 2008
The “Neutral Third Party” has cast their vote,
and the winner of the Lake Resort Nurse photo caption contest is:

** Rebecca **

All of the entries were great, but our judge was particularly fond of Rebecca’s because he could imagine hearing that caption in (and this is a direct quote) “the John Ratzenberger voice!!”

So, I’ll get your delicious Hello Panda goodness in the mail in the next few days, Rebecca. And thanks to everyone who left a comment : )

********************************************************************

In other news…

I’ve made another prototype of my bath mitt. This one is kid sized and I’m doing some market research - one of Josh’s co-workers has a 5 yr. old and an 8 yr. old and they are going to test it out and give me some feedback after the weekend. Mostly I’m curious about the size. If they say the size is good - then I’ll be able to get to work on the final sets.

So far I’ve done pretty well on my “Use What You Have” commitment.
I’ve bought a few supplies, but only what I’ve needed to finish projects,
and some trim for a customer who is interested in business card wallets.

Today was an exception to my Use What You Have commitment, though. Today I went to a special sale at a local clothing design shop. Folks who’ve read my blog before know that this sale is pretty important to me, and it only happens a few times during the year. I originally found out about these sales by accident and because of them I discovered a world of high end materials that have changed my entire business.

Want to see what I got?

I did very well this time… keep in mind I do not shop like this every day ; )

This is a nifty double sided fabric that I really like.
It’s pink! It’s polka dot! It’s double sided!
Future little tote bags, perhaps?

Three new colors of wool.
I’m esp. excited about the one on the bottom, it’s a pale grey, really lovely.

Leafy green linen on the left and two vintage trims.

There were also a few vintage linens there. too.
This pretty piece cost all of $3.
I’m going to decorate our dining room table with it.

Here’s a close up of little French knot details.

This is a pretty tea towel, wait ’til you see the dainty details on this…

…. look at those tiny stitches!

And then there were the buttons……..!

: D

*************************************************************

On Thursday, both our kitties; Lucy and Poe,
had to have some unexpected surgery.
It was pretty rough on them and emotionally rough on Josh and I.
So, we are staying in this weekend to nurse our girls back to health.
I expect it will be very quiet here. I may embroider some hedgehogs.

Wishing you a happy and creative weekend : )

Jenn

Adios, Reba.

This is the last Lake Resort Nurse post everybody.

It all started when I jokingly asked my pal Rebecca to send me Lake Resort Nurse
if I won a contest she was having on her blog. And being a generous and good humored friend, she sent me the book even though I didn’t win her contest.
And so began my Wednesday Lake Resort Nurse posts.

Can you believe it’s been 15 chapters already?
Are you as amazed as me that it’s gone so quickly?
Or did you think it would never end - haha!

**********************************************************************

In the past weeks we’ve identified so much with Reba and her small circle of friends: bitter Marie, Skip, Uncle Charlie, etc. We should take a moment to reflect on what, if anything, this romantic story about a nurse, who for the most part wasn’t very romantic and who did very little nursing, can teach us about life….. and stuff.

* We’ve learned that it is unreasonable to ask employees to work later than 5:00 pm, unless you want them to have one of “those” days.

* We’ve been educated that if our first impression of a stranger is that he is “stormy” and “authoritative” or has curiously erect shoulders, then he’s probably going to mess up our life somehow.

* We ladies have discovered that sometimes a gentleman can mistake us for a Buick convertible. And they don’t mean anything bad by that.

* We’ve realized that occasionally we can be with our significant other and not know if they are going to make love to us or fight with us. It’s ok. There is no shame in admitting this. We’ve all been there. But if it happens more often than occasionally, don’t be a Reba. Get some help.

* And we have bonded in the knowledge that, even when things aren’t going well for us, life isn’t so bad. I mean, if Arlene Hale refers to one closed mouth kiss as a “wild flame of passion”, you’ve just gotta feel kind of bad for her.
Poor dear.

****************************************************************************

There have also been unanswered questions, too.
And here is where Arlene Hale has given us a glimpse of her genius.
Because it is her unanswered questions that truly encourage her readers to think beyond this Lake Resort. Beyond Windwood.
Questions such as:

* Where does Reba keep her whiskey?

* How is the population of this town going to survive
if no one ever gets to second base?

* Why did Arlene Hale write this novel? It barely talks about nursing and there’s hardly any romance. What was Arlene’s real passion?
$0.10 cokes? Erect shoulders?
We may never know.

****************************************************************************

On a personal note, I have to say that I never expected the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response that my readers have had for Lake Resort Nurse. Every day I’ve received dozens of emails asking for “behind the scenes” tidbits about LRN.

The most popular question by far has been:

“Hey Jenn! What were those photo shoots like?
Was it all as glamorous as I imagine?”

And the answer to your question is “No, the photo shoots were not that glamorous.”
And they were made all the more un-glamorous when you take into consideration that the action figures of Reba and Marie wouldn’t stand up, so I often had to tape their feet to the table or lean them up against things.

This is the box where Reba and her friends resided between photo shoots.
See that big Ziplock bag to the right? That is a bag of misc. action figure weapons that Josh generously let me use if I needed them. There is also a package of minty lifesavers that I used as life preservers on the boat.
Now everything in that box smells minty. Very minty.

And here is a page of my storyboard for LRN.
Josh finds these quick sketches pretty funny.
I used this as a guide to set up the scenes for the photo shoots.

******************************************************

And now for the contest!

Here is one last photo that I’ve taken of bitter Marie the receptionist,
our star Reba, and a random toy from our collection.

Notice that there aren’t any thought bubbles on this photo?

Well now it’s your turn, readers!

* Leave me a comment with your best suggested dialogue for this photo. *

It can be anything you like - you don’t even have to mention the pig if you don’t want to. And references to anything that’s happened in the book will get bonus points.
The most humorous suggestion will be declared the winner.
I will not be judging this contest, the winner will be chosen by a neutral third party who is familiar with the LRN story.

The winner will receive this box of oh-so-delicious Hello Panda treats.
Reba’s favorite!

Comments will be accepted until this Friday morning, 7:00 am.
At that time the winner will be chosen and announced later that morning.

You guys have left me some hilarious comments about LRN over the past weeks. Now it’s time for one last Wednesday with Reba - this time YOU write the dialogue.
Let’s have it - show me what you’ve got!

*****************************************************************

And now, in all seriousness.
Thanks so much to everyone who has read and left a comment for LRN.
I have enjoyed your wit and humor immensely.
I can’t count how many times I have laughed out loud at what you’ve written.
Thanks for humoring me. Thanks for sharing LRN with me.

Have a great day, and leave a comment for the contest. I mean it!
I can’t eat another box of these yummy, yummy treats - I’ll explode!

The BTHMT-3000

Monday, March 10th, 2008
Introducing… the “BTHMT-3000″

….I call him “Terry” ; )

A little while ago I did a Martha’s Good Things Swap and my partner requested one of Martha’s simple bath mitts, made from a washcloth. I had so much fun making that bath mitt that I thought, surely there has to be a way to “cute this up” and make a fun item for little kids (and big kids, too!)

Originally I wanted to make dinosaurs, but after doing some sketching I quickly realized that dinosaurs don’t translate well into squarish, flat objects. Mainly because dinosaurs don’t have many facial features to play around with… at least not when it comes to a flat square of terrycloth.

So - dinosaurs “evolved” (haha) into cute monsters.
And Terry, here, is the first of the bunch. He is just a prototype for me to try some things out on, sewing-wise. I also tried using him as Martha suggests: putting a bar of soap inside to create a lather, and then I tossed him into the dryer - and as you can see, he took it all in great stride and is ready for another go!

The craftsmanship of the final versions will be better, of course. But I am very pleased with how this first little guy came together - especially the eyes, which are cracking me up right now. So now I will invest in some monster colored towels (which my husband informs me must be brown, green or purple) and get to work!

I also picked up a couple of these white washcloths with pale green trim…
…any guess what they may become?

Maybe if you think real hard, the answer may come to ewe ; )

In other news - my project tote “Sew Sew Monkey” sold today - yay!
It will be on it’s way to Michigan tomorrow morning.
I made three Sew Sew Monkey totes, so look for another in my shop soon.

Have a great day!

Jenn : )

Where, indeed?

Friday, March 7th, 2008
Upon returning home this evening from a delicious sushi dinner,
we walked by the laundry area in our house,
where I had a basket of bedding waiting to be washed.
When I mentioned that Lucy cat had been sleeping in the basket most of the day,
Josh said:

“Where did cats sleep before humans invented dirty laundry?”

Jenn : )
